A Christmas Memory

A Peak Proposal

A Christmas Memory

Last year, after Christmas-shopping all day, my boyfriend and I came home to relax for a few hours before attending a holiday party that evening. As I was trying to catch up on gift-wrapping, unbeknownst to me, my boyfriend was preparing to ask for my hand in marriage.

While wrapping gifts, I heard him clanking the porcelain houses that I collect and set up as a holiday village each Christmas season. I turned around and noticed that some of the little houses were out of place, so I asked my boyfriend what he was doing. He replied that he was plugging in the lights in the village. I left the room for a minute to get another gift to wrap, and when I returned to the living room my boyfriend asked if I noticed anything different in my holiday village. I did see a new piece, "The Wedding Gallery," and exclaimed, "Oh, you got me the wedding piece!"

At just that moment my eyes rested on the most beautiful diamond engagement ring, which my boyfriend had placed on the chimney of the wedding piece, and I started crying uncontrollably. He proceeded to get down on one knee, and asked if I would marry him. I was in a state of shock and just continued to cry. My boyfriend stood up and hugged me. I remember him asking me, "Isn't this a happy occasion?" I just nodded my head, still unable to say a word. Then I realized that I hadn't given him an answer. Of course I sobbed, "Yes."

I recently set up my village for the 2000 holiday season and relished the wonderful memories of my proposal as I set up my special piece, "The Wedding Gallery."

A Peak Proposal

My boyfriend always told me that he would not propose on a holiday, or my birthday or any date that I would be able to guess. So even though I knew he had the ring, I didn't expect anything over our Christmas vacation. In fact, when I left work that Friday, my coworkers asked if I would be getting engaged over the break and I replied with an emphatic "No!"

We had planned on going skiing that weekend. Not knowing that my boyfriend was planning something, I invited along our friend who was visiting us. The three of us skied together for a while and then agreed to split up and meet at the base lodge for lunch. Well, we ended up running into each other again shortly before lunch and decided that, rather than get lunch at the bottom of the ski run, we'd work our way up to lunch at the summit lodge. Somewhere along the line, I took a spill and the two of them had an opportunity to hatch their plan: Our friend would get lost once we reached the summit.

When we got off the lift, our friend announced that he was going to speed back down hill. Since we were only a short, flat trail away from the lodge, I found this a bit odd. But then my boyfriend pulled off to the side and asked me to wait. I couldn't imagine why. As he took off his skis and then his gloves, I became more and more impatient. Then he stepped in front of me and reached into his jacket. He got down on his knee in the snow and I began to cry hysterically. I think he had to ask me twice because I couldn't quite get the words out the first time!

We finally proceeded to the lodge, where our friend was waiting with hot cider for a toast. I am the nosiest person in the world, so my new fiance was very proud of successfully surprising me.

The most exciting day of my life started out as a series of very romantic outings with my (then) boyfriend. We spent the first half of the day at a wedding and reception. After that we went out to celebrate the promotion I had just gotten at work. We ended up at a beautiful Italian restaurant and had a fabulous dinner. After dinner was over, we decided to not go to a movie as we'd originally planned but just go to Barnes and Noble and look around. Now, since we had already started talking about getting married, I went straight to the wedding section. Here comes the surprising part though. Instead of going to the computer section like he usually does, he followed me right over! I loved it. In fact, when I saw a book called, How to Buy a Diamond, I jokingly asked Jeff if he needed that book. He said, ''I don't know, why don't you tell me?'' Then he got down on his knee, took the ring out of his coat pocket and said, ''Melissa, will you marry me?'' I just stood there. Finally, after some of the shock wore off, I was able to answer. ''Yes, yes, yes!''

Hawaiian Holiday

When my office needed to send me to Hawaii for a business trip, my boyfriend Eric decided to come with me. (Who could resist a cheap trip to Hawaii?)

Once we got there, we decided to go on a sunset dinner cruise. Eric set up our plans for the evening while I was at work but asked me not to try to figure out where we were going afterward. Of course I couldn't help but guess. In fact, I tried to guess where we were going throughout the entire dinner. Do we drive there? Do we walk? Will there be other people there? Do we have a reservation? From the way he was acting, I thought that he was getting mad about it. (I'd never seen him so nervous before, so I didn't realize what was really causing his strange behavior).

When we left the boat, he was looking around trying to find something. He wouldn't tell me what he was looking for at first, but after much pleading I finally got him to explain that he was searching for our limo. I thought he was kidding, but sure enough, we walked over to a limo and the driver got out for us! She gave us each leis and said ''congratulations.'' Being completely shocked by the limo itself, I didn't even catch it. I thought ''Oh, congratulations for riding a limo, I guess.'' Then when I got inside, I saw a picture of my dog, Jake, dressed in a bowtie. Next to his picture was a bottle of champagne. I started crying instantly. Eric was going to wait to propose until we got to a look out point over Honolulu, but he couldn't wait. As I sat there in tears, he asked me to marry him. We spent the night driving around Honolulu, drinking champagne and seeing the sights. Then we went for a romantic walk on the beach.

Now, almost a year later, we're only days away from our wedding date, October 28.
